The Netherlands has reached a new milestone in its progressive drug policy with the sale of tolerated and regulated cannabis in ten municipalities, including Maastricht. This project, which started on July 1, 2024, aims to ensure the safety and quality of cannabis products and reduce illegal trade.
In the participating municipalities, adults aged 18 and over can now legally purchase cannabis from selected coffee shops. These shops are required to have their products tested for quality and safety, protecting consumers from contaminated and unsafe products. The involved municipalities are Breda, Tilburg, Almere, Arnhem, Nijmegen, Zaanstad, Hellevoetsluis, Heerlen, and now also Maastricht.
Initial reactions are positive. Coffee shop owners report an increase in customers and an improvement in product quality. Additionally, tax revenues from regulated cannabis sales are higher than expected, benefiting prevention and education campaigns on responsible use.
Although concerns remain about a possible increase in cannabis use among young people, the government continues to strictly enforce age limits and invest in extensive education.
With this step, the Netherlands hopes not only to improve public health and safety but also to strengthen its position as a world leader in progressive drug legislation.
